Everyone lies. There are many lies we tell each other: white lies, red lies, black lies. In this video, we look at the most common lies we tell daily. Why lie, you ask? We do it to save face, to smooth out social situations, to make people feel better, to make our lives more comfortable. This list is full of (mostly) harmless lies that we have become so accustomed to saying that we may not even notice them. Find out which are the things most people lie about.

A large difference exists between black lies and white lies: With black lies, the deceiver tries to gain something at the cost of the deceived. In other words, the deceiver exploits the deceived out of self-interest. A classic example is the notorious used car dealer, who lies to customers about the state of the cars that are for sale.

Regarding white lies, the picture looks different: The deceiver lies to please the deceived by using affiliative deception. For example, most of us have told a friend that their new haircut looks great to please and not irritate the friend, while secretly disliking the hair cut.

White lies are an easy way out of a potential row, someone thinking slightly less of you, causing conflict, or making a situation unpleasant. They keep the peace and as long as they’re not used too frequently, are totally harmless and innocent.

Things most people lie about are told to three specific groups of people -strangers, coworkers, or loved ones - but, regardless of who you’re lying to, one thing’s for sure: we all tend to fib a little more than we’re willing to admit.
