Iraq’s prime minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has survived an assassination attempt by an armed drone. The attack left multiple members of the leader’s personal protection force injured. Three drones were used in the attack, including two that were intercepted and downed by security forces, while the third drone hit the prime minister’s residence. Al-Kadhimi later appeared in a video calling for ‘peaceful dialogue, for Iraq, and Iraq’s future.’ The drone attack marks an escalating attempt by Iran-backed militant groups attempting to overturn the recent general election.
